^^CHAPTER ONE: BRONA'S RETURN
^
^The sun was already sinking into the deep green of the hills to the west of the valley, when Flick
^Ohmsford began his descent. He had traveled the road many times in his experience living in the
^Vale, but tonight he could sense something was different. Without noticing it, a tall dark figure
^had come upon him.
^"Wait a moment, friend. I'm no enemy and have no wish to harm you. I merely seek directions and
^would be grateful if you could show me the proper path," the stranger explained.
^After some moments of uncertaint slience, Flick was seized by the hands and lifted clear into the
^air.
^"What are you going to do now, I wonder? I could cut your heart out on the spot and leave you
^for the wolves if I chose, couldn't I?"
^After the stranger explained once more that he meant no harm and was only hunger and in
^search of an inn, Flick opened up and agreed to taking him to the inn at Shady Vale which his
^father ran.

^On their way to the Vale, the tall stranger suddenly stops and listens, but Flick fails to hear

^Flick is pushed in into the thicket before he can react. He sits there patiently and noticed that
^ the stranger is not looking at the road ahead, but into the sky. Minutes passed and Flick still
^sees nothing. Flick begins to ease his tired limbs when a huge ominous shadow passed by
^overhead and out of sight. Shortly it returned, and seemed to be circling. Terror seized the young
^Valeman and just before he thought he would lose control, the voice of the stranger broke
^through:
^"Come now, my young friend, you are alive and well. It was just a shadow, but here is nethier

^entered through the lobby. The stranger begins to stare intensly at Shea, and after some moments
^of uncertainty, Shea begins to speak:
^"I don't believe we have met. You seem to know me, and I feel I should know you, but I don't."
^The stranger smiles and says "Perhaps you should know me, though it is not surprising that you
^do not remember. But I know who you are; indeed, I know you well. My name is Allanon"

^Shea thinks about how Allanon could have known him. After the declaration he had refused to
^say more so Shea spent the night pondering things. He retraced the events of his life. His earliest
^memories were playing with the elven children in a small Westland community. His mother had
^fallen ill and decided to take Shea back to her hometown, where she soon died and Shea was
^apdotped by his only known relatives, the Ohmsfords. Shea thought about the years since then
^and nowhere could he remember meeting Allanon...
^The next mourning, the Ohmsford brothers meet Allanon outside the inn. Allanon asks Shea
^what he knows of the Skull Kingdom, but Shea fails to impress him his knowledge of myths.
^"I am a historian, Shea, among other things- perhaps the most widely traveled historian alive
^today, since few besides myself have entered the Northland in over five hundred years. The past
^has become a blurred memory, and just as well perhaps; for the history of Man has not been
^glorious in the last two thousand years. Men today have forgot the past and know nothing about
^the world today outside their Southland communities....."

^me?"
^ALLANON: "Fool! .... You fool! .... You know so little... What does the race of Man know of
^truth- where has Man been but hiding, creeping in terror under piteous shelters in the deepest
^regions of the Southland like frightened rabbits? You dare to tell me that I speak of fairy
^tales-you, who have never known strife, safe here in your precious Vale! I came to find the
^bloodline of kings, but I have found a little boy who hides himself in falsehoods. You are nothing
^but a child!"
^Shea leaps to his feet and brandishes his fists in fury before his giant accuser, shaking with rage
^and humiliation.
^ALLANON: "Hold, Shea. Do not be a greater fool! All that has come down through the ages as
^legend and was so told to the race of Man. But what I tell you is no legend but truth. The sword

^Shea relaxes and sees that Allanon is not deliberately lying to him, but actually believes in the
^ludicrous fairy tale. Allanon explains that even as the legend says, an heir to the House of
^Shannara would come forth and take up the Sword against the Warlock Lord. Allanon explains
^that Eventine, King of Elves, is not the heir as Shea had thought, but that Shea is.
^SHEA: "What does all of this mean?"
^ALLANON: "What I have told you is known also to the Lord of Darkness, though he does not
^yet know where you live or who you are. But his emissaries will find you sooner or later, and
^when they do, you will be destroyed."
^SHEA: But what have I done to deserve this?"
^Allanon explains that Shea is the last heir, and all the other heirs were elven and were found and
^easily destroyed. The only reason Shea lives is because he is half-man and Brona did not know

^
^^**LETTER FROM ALLANON**
^I do not have time to explain things further. A matter of great importance has occurred, and I
^most leave immediately-prehaps now I am even too late. You must trust and believe me, even
^though I will not be able to return. You will not long be safe in Shady Vale, and you must be
^prepared to flee quickly. Should your safety be threatened you will find shelter at Culhaven in the
^forests of the Anar. I will send a friend to guide you. Place your trust in Balinor. Speak with no

^Elfstones. They will provide you with guidance and protection when nothing else can. Be
